Big South update
Posted on Mountainbuzz by deepsouthpaddler

As of today (fri), the water supply guys still plan on turning long draw up to 200 cfs tomorrow around mid day. Should stay that way through the weekend. If they get rain and thunderstorms this afternoon, they might not need to turn it up, but they think thats a small chance. They will make a final determination sat morning. Hopefully I’ll be able to post tomorrow am before folks start the drive if flows aren’t coming up. I’ll try to get something on the buzz by 8am.

Pine View 3.0+

Riding the upper part of the Bar we’re back to 3+. Currently 56F, cloudy and damp. Today…Cloudy. A 20 percent chance of showers and afternoon thunderstorms. Highs in the lower 60s. North winds 10 to 15 mph.

Big South Flows Update
Posted on Mountainbuzz by deepsouthpaddler

Water supply Co. turned turned down long draw outflow to 130 cfs today. Rains lowered demand for water. Current plans are to turn long draw back up to ~200 cfs on saturday. The guy that changes flows usually makes the change around 11am or noon. If you are paddling sat it will likely be worth your while to wait for a later put in to get the extra water.

For folks that don’t want the bone zone wierd creek experience… considering hiking in at corral creek. Its a short hike with a good trail and not very strenous. It drops you in just above the small foot bridge at the confluence of wierd creek and the big south proper.

Pine View 2.9 at 0830

Long draw was releasing about 200 from my guess of the flow. I would say it was medium ish.I have ran it much lower and much higher. It was 2 and a half marks on the rock lapping the third. Joe wright was low but you could scrape down, water over the carnito boof flake but not enough to boof. Spencers was good. Wood in Fantasy Flight and Melt Down still. That melt down wood was not easy to see. Everything else is clean.

Upper Canyon Update

Things dropped off considerably since mid week in the upper canyon.

Big South – 4inches showing on gauge rock. Lapping just above the top line. Nice manageable high level if they would just open the stinking gate.

Joe Wright – low to too low for me. Fan rock boof in Carnito was not in with water only barely flowing over the right edge. Definite boat abuse at best.

Spencer Heights – still at a nice level. Pretty perfect medium flow for multiple laps (what we did this evening). My guess was around 3.2 on the “old” Sportsmans gauge with no Tunnel input.

Also – Whiteline has DEFINITELY changed! I think we lost our choicest boof on the Front Range. It’s a sad day in the Fort today but who knows, maybe it will be sweet… hard to tell.

JW-Spencer Shots from today and I think Whiteline changed

The Joe Wright/Spencer Heights combo IS in. JW is a solid medium high/high and Spencer was approximately 3.5 on Sportsman’s with no tunnel. Two new pieces of wood to avoid on Joe Wright. One will require a portage at even slightly lower flows. This wood is early in the run below Carnito but above the main action and blind corners. It is a notorious wood collecting spot where the left channel was open the last few years and where the right channel was a sneak a number of years ago. Neither of these were open today but there was tiny bit of water going through the far right channel. There is an o.k. eddy on the right and then spot the knuckle dragging channel through some leggy bushes.

The other new wood is just below all of the main corner action. It looks river wide from above but you can pretty easily get around it on the left.

Spencer Heights is the goods with no woods.

Whiteline appears to have changed. Not sure what happened but the high water definitely re-arranged some stuff at the bottom elongating the main drop. Interested to see what it will look like at lower flows.

Currently 72.7, sunny and calm. NOAA is calling for a high of 89F with slight chance for Tstorms in the canyon.

Lower North Fork still cranking at 787 cfs at Livermore.

Second hand-report from the upper canyon, from earlier today:

Joe Wright: Medium, with at least two new pieces of wood to avoid along the way. No portaging required, but definitely a heads up for new wood.

Spencer Heights: Medium-high and clean

Pine View 4.3 at NOON

Currently 68.8Ff, sunny with a slight breeze. Absolutely beautiful Day! Expect a high of 79F with a 10% chance for rain.

Lower N Fork still up at 922 cfs at Livermore as of 0800.

Pine View 4.8 at 0700

Currently 45.6F, cloudy and calm. WX.com expects a warmer day reaching the 60′s with a good chance for scattered showers. Expect better Wx tomorrow.

Don’t know if I believe it, but Colorado River Flows is claiming 1040 cfs for the Lower North Fork at Livermore!

Have fun.

Little South Fork: Juicin (HIGH)!
Our group of 8 ran the Little South Fork yesterday. We faced 2 mandatory strainer portages in the upper section of the run, and a mostly clear channel through the main drop. Due to visible wood and some uncertainty about possibly more wood under the water surface, we all opted for the portage route on the main drop. At yesterday’s flow the run is busy and committing read-and-run class IV/IV+, with a class V’ish spike for the main drop. As always, heads up for new wood and be prepared for a wilderness adventure!
