Report on Condition of Poudre

May 13, 2014 By frenchy

Boaters,
I have a couple very experienced friends (former guides on the Poudre) who ran the Riv on Fri when it was up and gave a full report of some anticipated potential problem spots post micro floods and the Sept flood. Here is their report.

This is in no way an endorsement by the PRR. Nor does the PRR certify these findings. The condition of the River including logs, boulders and condition of rapids can change at any time. Boat/raft/kayak/float/fish at your own risk.

Report:
River report from a run from Steven’s Gulch down to BTO on Friday May 9th. The river was flowing nicely at 2.8 on the rock which is a nice surprise for this early in the season. The main areas of concern today were 3way (3 rock), Rattlesnake Gulch/palace climbing area and Tunnel. After a mudslide last summer 3way was virtually unrunnable as it was chock full of trees and other debris. The flood from sept 2013 did this rapid well and cleaned it all out. Today 3way was clear and essentially then same as it was pre mudslide. Rattlesnake Gulch/palace climbing area has had the most dramatic change since the flood. The gulch on the north side of the river blew out and completely covered the left channel of the river and basically turned that island into the left bank. The main channel above that island has been dug out and is much deeper than before. The stronger current tended to pull us river left towards the bank and oncoming right turn, but we were able to straighten out and run below there without issue. Tunnel was unchanged. I had heard of a change in a hole that forced folks into the wall on river left, but no such issues were had. From there down, the river was unchanged. There is a tree mid current below 3way with branches sticking up, but easily seen and avoidable.

Enjoy
