Folks, it is getting warmer and we all feel like recreating and playing in the water. This time of year, Horsetooth Reservoir is a great place to get wet. Now is not the time to tube the Poudre. And at no time, is it appropriate or safe to play anywhere near a dam. The Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District, Larimer County Dive Rescue, City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Rangers and PFA responded to a tubing incident near Gateway Park that has resulted in a missing dog.
From Larimer County Sheriff’s Office FB post yesterday:
Earlier today, Dispatch received a report that two adults and a dog had an emergency on the Poudre River near Gateway Natural Area after the group’s inner tubes went over a low head dam. The people were able to self-rescue and got to shore with minor injuries; however, the dog remained in the water.
LCSO Emergency Services and Emergency Medical Operations personnel, Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District, Larimer County Dive Rescue, City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Rangers, and Poudre Fire Authority responded to support swiftwater rescue efforts. Three tubes were removed, but unfortunately, the dog was not found. If anyone locates a small terrier in the area, please contact NOCO Humane.
River safety is important in every season, and water rescues are especially common during the spring runoff. Remember these simple but lifesaving tips:
💧The river is running fast, cold, and deep this time of year. Always check river conditions before you recreate on the water, and make sure that your watercraft is designed to handle any hazards you may encounter.
🦺 Always wear a personal flotation device when you’re on the water. Having it “nearby” won’t help if you capsize unexpectedly. Make sure the PFD is sized appropriately for the wearer and fits snugly.
❌ Low heads dams may look harmless, but they create strong, life-threatening currents beneath the surface. Avoid swimming or boating on either side of a dam.
