NOAA’s predictions…HOT. Go figure

I don’t know if this is a cruel joke, or the water commissioner’s messed up sense of irony, but it was flowing a pretty consistent 2.0 the whole three weeks the Riv was closed (+/-), and now that it’s open we are at 1.1.

At least it is open, and flowing clear. Already warm with a few clouds in the sky. NOAA expects- Today: Isolated showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 89. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Boaters and Anglers-

Larimer County Officials have opened Hwy 14 to non-residents today. PLEASE drive carefully and slower than normal!!! I can’t stress this enough- thre will still be some fire crews throughout the Canyon for the next couple of weeks. And, there will be a ton of looky lous driving the Canyon and stopping frequently to stare and take pictures. Many won’t take the time to pull over.

As for the water, the water is clear again. Here again I want you to take caution- mudslides and rock slides. It’s not a matter of “if”, but “when” they come. New rapids could develop overnight! Scout often, especially after a significant rain.

So- enjoy the Riv again. You may be saddened and amazed at what you see.

Howdy Boaters & Anglers. Here’s your most recent update:

They have just allowed Residents of Poudre Park back into their homes. So, the canyon is open for Residents ONLY at this time from Ted’s Place to Hewlett Gulch Bridge. No word yet on when they may open the Lower Canyon for Non-Residents, tourism, sightseeing (lots to see!) and recreation.

I was assured by folks in the know (thanks Marty) that after a hard rain the ash that will start to flow into the Riv and make our waters black pose no particular health risk.

The Major Risk I anticipate after hard downpours is rock slides and tree falls. What does this mean to you- potentially new rapids (un-announced) and new strainers. My suggestion to you is to scout the Riv wherever/whenever possible before you run- even if you just ran it the day before- and especially after a hard rain!! Provided they open the Riv to recreation while still boat-able… And certainly the first few times out for 2013. And if you find a new rapid and/or strainer- please report it on the rock and/or Mtn Buzz!

As of current conditions- raining!! Yes, Yes- Rain. It is raining for the second time today- nice steady rain. The Riv is still clear, so I don’t believe there are slides above just yet.

Currently 2.0 on Pine View. Hang in there folks. We will get out of this yet.
