Pine View 1.1 at 0700

May 4, 2013 By frenchy

Pine View at 1.1 this morning. Currently 36˚F and mostly sunny. We’re sitting on 69″ at Joe Wright with a snow water equivalency of 23.0″. Today’s Wx: A 10 percent chance of showers after 3pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Light and variable wind becoming east southeast 6 to 11 mph in the morning.

As was mentioned yesterday, there’s wood in pine view. There was also a log noticed in the filter plant run right at Mad Dog. Don’t know status today.

Colorado Marathon is Sunday- expect thousands of runners and congested traffic until about noon. Boat/Angle safe

Pine View at 0.8 at 18:30

May 3, 2013 By frenchy

Maybe 0.9 if optimistic.

Watch out for a log in Disney parallel to the current if you run Pine View. And just watch for wood in general.

Note the ditch at the mouth is flowing strong so the gauge will read low.

Also watch out for runners in the canyon Sunday 6am to noon for the Colorado Marathon.

Logs in Middle Narrows

April 24, 2012 By frenchy

Heads up for wood in the Middle Narrows. Three logs (the two visible in the picture, plus a small one at river level in the middle channel) are currently blocking the right and center channels of the river in the stretch immediately above the s-turn section, above the play wave, half-way down the middle narrows. These logs could shift and get lodged further downstream as the water rises.

Wood in the Middle Narrows
Swinging bridge rapid @ 2.25ft
Cameron Pass snowpack, as of yesterday

Upper Canyon & Lower Big South Wood Update

July 25, 2011 By frenchy

Joe Wright: Medium-High
Big South: High (top line on the rock). Long draw road is still closed.
Spencer Heights: Medium-High (2.75-3ft on the new Spencer Heights gauge)

Joe Wright Creek Update
As Marty mentioned in his earlier post, Carnito Canyon has changed. The old flake boof move is history, and at this weekend’s levels the rapid is generally more challenging. See photos below for a visual.

Big South Wood Update
1) Heads up for wood around the second bend after Double Trouble – we snuck it far right without issues
2) Stay left after Pin Cushion to avoid the barely submerged log. At this weekend’s flow the log was 3″ under water and is sure to come into play as levels drop.
3) As always, watch for random wood placement as flows drop

Little South Update

June 15, 2011 By frenchy

As clean as I’ve seen the run… great level… surging 85/90 on the gauge at the top and splashing over the 2nd marker rock at the bottom.

We put on at 6:15… probably close to the daily peak… and ran it in under 2 hours… but if the wheels fall off the wagon in there it can take a lot longer… difficult river-side terrain and a gnarly walk out should it come to that… I’ve been with groups that have taken 5 hours, other’s have overnighted…

Only one real wood issue… the tree/rock sieve 3/4 down the bigger rapid near the end is horrible with lots of water pushing left into it. Stay right!
